Assessing Insulation Needs: A Homeowners’ Guide

assess your home's insulation

Does Your Home Need Better Insulation?

Insufficient insulation can lead to high energy bills, uneven temperatures, and even structural issues and health concerns. Here are simple tips for assessing insulation needs in your home.

Where to Look

  1. Attic: Check for exposed joists or thin insulation layers.
  2. Walls: Look for drafts or cold spots near windows and doors, electrical outlets, and entry points for piping, drains, and wiring.
  3. Crawl Spaces: Inspect for moisture, which indicates poor insulation, and for open areas that can introduce drafts.

DIY Tools

  • Thermal Cameras: $$$$$ – Will detect hot and cold spots. The entry price point for a thermal camera that connects to your mobile phone can start at $400 – $500 but may pay off in dividends once your home is sealed.
  • Incense Stick: $ – Light a stick of incense and carry it around to windows, doors, vents, electrical outlets, etc., and see if the smoke is pulled in/out or moved by drafts. Sealing these areas will prevent your heated/cooled air (and your money) from escaping.
  • Measuring Tape: $ – Check insulation thickness against recommended levels and existing data at EnergyStar.gov.
