Concrete Raising: The Latest and Greatest Method

When you’re focused on running a business, the last thing you want to deal with are problems that begin small, but end up becoming very costly later on. A good example of a problem that seems small but can easily grow into something big is that crack in your sidewalk. Have you noticed cracks like that, or in your walkways, steps or in any part of your foundation? Read further to learn more about concrete raising.

Uneven concrete should be repaired as soon as possible not only for aesthetic reasons, but for the safety of your property’s foundation.

What Causes Cement Cracks and Unevenness

There are many factors, but it’s usually the effects of time. Over time, water infiltration of the subsoil can create holes and spaces that eventually damage and weaken the existing foundation. Animals may make their homes in some of the spaces created, which can add to the headache for home and business owners.

You’ll want to get it fixed immediately, because not only does it affect the appearance of your home or business, but it can create potential hazards. You or someone else could trip and fall over an uneven sidewalk. Damaged concrete can also impact the drainage around your foundation, allowing water to collect in places that make it hazardous.

Replacing the concrete completely is very expensive and requires ripping up the landscaping around your home or business. Raising the concrete is a better way.

Concrete Raising 101

Polyurethane concrete raising, or “foam lifting,” is the latest and greatest concrete repair method. Why? First, it’s more cost-effective—less than half the cost of pouring brand new concrete. There are also no landscaping costs.

How Foam Lifting Works

Polyurethane foam is injected under a concrete slab in holes about 5/8 inches in diameter to fill voids, which raise the concrete to the correct level. Because foam expands in every direction, it takes fewer holes to do the job. Foam lifting involves a more lightweight material, which weighs about three to eight pounds per cubic foot. A lighter material means fewer and smaller injection holes. After the foam is injected into the holes, they are patched with cement.

Benefits of Foam Lifting

Foam lifting is not as invasive or disruptive as mudjacking or other traditional methods. There’s no demolition necessary, and no dirt and mess to clean up. In fact, you can usually carry on business as usual while the process is taking place. It can usually be done on the same day. Professional contractors will use a hose that goes from a truck or trailer to the area being worked on. Expect a couple hours for the foam to set.

Another advantage to foam lifting is that it is waterproof and resists erosion. This is critical when you’re talking about potential threats to your building structure’s foundation. In addition, it’s an eco-friendly choice that you, your employees and customers can all feel good about.
